In 2026, the Dominikaner Market will celebrate its 765th anniversary—yet many visitors to Gdańsk have never heard of it. This is one of Europe’s oldest continuously running markets, and if you happen to be in town between late July and mid-August, it’s hard to miss: stretching across the entire Main Town, not just a single square.

The Dominikanek Market 2026 runs from July 25 to August 16 — over three weeks, significantly longer than a typical summer festival. During this time, more than 200 events take place across six areas of the city: concerts, street parades, shows, and of course, market stalls lining Długi Targ and surrounding streets.

Don’t confuse it with the winter Christmas Market — these are two different events, held at different times of year and with distinct characters. Where This 765 Years of History Comes From

The story begins in 1260, when Pope Alexander IV granted Gdańsk’s Dominican friars indulgence on the feast day of their patron saint, Saint Dominic. The religious fair quickly attracted merchants—first local ones, then from across Europe—and over time evolved into one of the most important trade fairs on the continent, drawing even nobility and Polish kings. What you see today on Długi Targ is a direct, though certainly modernized, continuation of this seven-century-old tradition.

Seasonal attractions such as a Ferris wheel or a Venetian carousel are also available nearby—these are separate events in Gdańsk’s summer program, not strictly part of the fair itself, but happening at the same time and place, making it easy to combine them into one evening.

When to Visit to Avoid Crowds

Three weeks is a long time, but not every day is the same:

• The first week tends to be quieter than mid-August, when the peak holiday season hits the city.
• Weekday mornings are definitely the best time for a peaceful stroll between stalls without crowds.
• Evenings and weekends see Long Market very busy — great atmosphere, but harder to get quiet photos or walk without stopping every few steps.
