Gdansk has something many cities recommended for romantic getaways lack: a compact city center where you can easily spend an entire weekend at a leisurely pace—and water views of the Motława river, Bay of Gdańsk, and piers in nearly every frame. Below is a plan that’s worked well for our guests for years, hour by hour.

Why an apartment, not a hotel package

A hotel for a romantic weekend sounds great, but it comes with limitations—standard room, hallway, reception desk, breakfast at a set time in a crowded dining hall. An apartment offers something different: privacy, a full kitchen, and a real view from the window, rather than a standardized hotel space.

In practice, this means you can have breakfast whenever you want, at your own pace, without checking the clock. You can also leave a bottle of wine in the fridge for the evening or prepare something simple instead of going out for every meal. For a couple who wants their weekend to be just theirs, that’s a difference you feel from the first evening.

Add to this the view and space. A standard hotel room in the city center rarely offers more than a view of the street. Friday evening — check-in and first stroll

17:00–18:00 — check-in at the apartment. Entry is contactless, via a smart lock in the app (Tedee, or Nuki in some apartments), so you don’t need to wait for keys or arrange a specific time with staff.

19:00 — stroll along the Long Embankment at sunset, a riverside promenade alongside the Crane and old tenements. This is the best time of day for this route—light reflects on the water, and the crowds from the day have already thinned out.

20:30 — first dinner in town. It doesn’t need to be with a view—just a good restaurant close to your accommodation, so you don’t waste the evening traveling. The first night is a great time to stay near your lodging and unwind after travel, rather than immediately planning long excursions—there’ll be plenty of time for that on Saturday.

If you’re flying or driving into Gdansk from afar, it’s worth scheduling your arrival to make it in time for Friday evening—even a short walk after check-in sets the tone for the rest of the weekend better than spending the first evening in the apartment right after a long journey.

Saturday — a day in the city and a cruise on the Motława

Morning — breakfast for two in the apartment, unhurried. This is the best part of staying in an apartment instead of a hotel — coffee, something fresh from a local bakery, and quiet.

Mid-morning — a stroll through the Main Town: Długi Targ, the Crane (Żuraw), and St. Mary’s Basilica. It’s worth leaving some time without a strict plan — Gdańsk is best enjoyed when you simply wander around.

Afternoon — seasonally (usually from spring to early autumn), cruises on the Motława river run — short water routes toward Westerplatte or along the river itself. It’s a light, pleasant way to spend an hour together, offering a completely different perspective than walking on cobblestones. Schedules change seasonally, so check current offerings from operators before leaving the apartment.

Evening — dinner with a view. Restaurants along Long Embankment and near the Crane offer tables with views of the water and illuminated tenements after dark — one of those Gdańsk moments that stays in memory for longer. If you’re set on a specific window table, book ahead, especially on weekends.

After dinner — a walk down Mariacka Street. In the evening, when most amber shops are closed, the street changes character — stone steps, wrought-iron lamps, and silence make it one of the most atmospheric spots in town for an evening stroll together. It’s also a great time for photos — fewer people in the frame than during the day, and the lighting on the tenements after dark looks completely different from daylight.

Practical details to sort out in advance

A few things are easier to arrange before your arrival than on-site under time pressure. If you’re planning a specific dinner with a view, book a table in advance—best window seats disappear first, especially on weekends. The same goes for a Motława river cruise during peak season; if you want a particular departure time, such as just before sunset, reserve ahead.

It’s also worth deciding in advance whether you’d prefer a specific view from your apartment—water, defensive walls, or the sea—and ask about it when booking, rather than hoping for luck upon arrival.

Sunday — a peaceful farewell to the city

Morning — second breakfast in the apartment, this time without plans for the rest of the day. This is when you appreciate the private kitchen most—you don’t have to leave before check-out just to grab something to eat.

Mid-morning — if there’s still time left, a short walk around the neighborhood where you’re staying. Bastion Wałowa offers easy walking access to the Main Town, DOKI provides a quieter, post-industrial vibe and coffee at Montownia, while Seaside lets you enjoy sea air as a final farewell.

Instead of packing everything in the last hour before check-out, give yourself some buffer time for a calm pack-up and one last coffee without rushing—this is one of those details that in hotels are fixed by strict check-out times, but at an apartment can be arranged more flexibly if you ask ahead about late check-out.

When to Go for the Most Romantic Experience

Summer has its charm—long, warm evenings by the water—but it’s also the most expensive and crowded time of year. If you value peace and quiet, April–May or September–October are your best bet: accommodation prices are lower, restaurants have available tables without needing to book weeks in advance, and strolls through the Old Town can be enjoyed without weaving between tourist groups.

Is it worth staying longer than a weekend

Many of our guests arrive for two nights and leave regretting they didn’t book a third. Gdansk works well as a short getaway, but it truly has more to offer than can fit into a Friday evening and Saturday — Sopot with its pier is just 20 minutes by SKM, and quieter districts like DOKI deserve an unhurried evening of their own.

If you have the chance, consider extending your stay by one day, especially outside the summer season when apartment prices are lower than in summer. The third night rarely costs proportionally as much as the first two, and it gives you real breathing room in your schedule — something missing from a typical Friday-to-Sunday weekend.
