May is the moment when Gdansk stops being a winter city of museums and cafes and hasn’t yet become a summer crowd on the beach. It’s that brief window—just a few weeks each year—when you get both good weather and peace and quiet. It’s an ideal time whether you’re visiting Gdansk for the first time or returning every year—not as a replacement for summer, but as something the peak season no longer offers: the chance to plan your day without booking weeks in advance. Below is a concrete plan for making the most of it.

Why May Wins

The weather is inviting but not overwhelming. Daytime temperatures are usually around 15–18°C, with more sun than in April but without the July heat that can make strolling through the Main Town uncomfortable in Gdańsk.

It’s still pre-season. Apartment prices are lower than in June and July, yet the city is already fully “open” — outdoor cafés return, bike rentals start up, and the promenade in Brzeźno comes alive.

No crowds. Waiting in line at the Amber Museum during May Day takes just a few minutes, not forty-five like in July. Long Market is pleasant to walk along without pushing through crowds. Restaurants have free tables without needing reservations weeks ahead, and there’s always space on café terraces—even on Saturday afternoons.

Long weekend, short trip. May Day usually means a few days off without taking vacation time—perfect for a getaway that doesn’t require much planning but still delivers a full sense of changing your surroundings. For many guests from central and southern Poland, traveling to the Baltic coast during May is more convenient than in midsummer when motorways and parking lots in the Tricity area are overloaded.

Opening of the Coastal Season

The turn of April and May is when Gdańsk officially “opens” its coastal season — lifeguards return to their towers, cafes on the promenade in Brzeźno unveil their gardens, and the beach begins to come alive, even though the water is still too cold for swimming. It’s a great time to see the coast in its “awakening” form — without umbrellas, sun loungers, or crowds, but with the first spring sunshine.

It’s worth planning this carefully: some seasonal food vendors along the promenade don’t open until the first weekend of May, so if you want the full range of beachside eateries, aim for the second half of the month rather than the beginning. The first week of May, however, is often the quietest — fewer open establishments, but practically zero crowds.

Cycling along the coastal path

May is one of the best times of year for a bike ride along the coast. The route from Letnica through Brzeźno to Sopot is fully marked, runs partly along the beach and partly through the forest, and can be cycled in either direction at a leisurely pace in just a few hours. In May, you’ll have it practically to yourself—without the crowds that arrive in July and August.

If you prefer a slower, greener alternative, consider stopping at Reagan Park between Brzeźno and Jelitkowo—a large coastal green space right next to the cycling path, perfect for a relaxed day on two wheels or on foot. In May, the greenery is fresh and vibrant before summer heat takes its toll, and the trails are dry and comfortable after winter mud.

Bicycles can be rented at several points around the city as well as through the city’s bike-sharing system—most stations resume full operation in early May after their winter break.

Westerplatte and Wisłoujście Fortress — history in spring

May is also a great time for visiting historical sites, which can be sweltering and crowded with tour buses in summer. Westerplatte, the symbolic site of the outbreak of World War II, is much more enjoyable to visit in spring—open spaces, sea breezes from the Bay of Gdańsk, and fewer organized groups at once. Similarly, Twierdza Wisłoujście, one of Poland’s oldest defensive structures, with its distinctive round lighthouse, can be explored almost entirely for yourself in May without waiting in line to enter the walls.

Both sites are close to each other and work well as a single, quieter day trip away from the crowds of the Main Town. In summer, that same day would mean standing in line for the ferry and searching for shade between the ramparts—while in May it’s simply a pleasant stroll.

May Events

May in Gdansk is also the start of the cultural season: first open-air concerts, exhibition openings, and beachside sports events. Three-Day May Day Plan

Day 1 — Main Town and Motława: Stroll along Long Market, see the Crane and walk by the Motława riverbank, have lunch at one of the restaurants on Mariacka Street, then take a short evening walk to the Wyżynna Gate— evenings are much quieter here than in summer.

Day 2 — Coastal Ride by Bike: Spend the whole day on the Letnica route—Brzeźno–Sopot, with coffee stops at the pier in Brzeźno and another at the pier in Sopot. Return via SKM if your legs need a break.

Day 3 — Culture Without Queues: Visit the Museum of the Second World War or ECS in the morning (May Day is a great time—queues are short), then take an afternoon walk through DOKI and Montownia—a foodhall with local cuisine, perfect for a relaxed, long lunch before heading back. If you still have time, add an afternoon visit to Westerplatte—by boat from Long Embankment or by car; allow about half a day total, including travel both ways and sightseeing.

This plan assumes a moderate pace—two or three main stops per day with time for coffee and spontaneity. One of the advantages of May Day: you don’t have to rush like in a sweltering July day when every hour outside the shade comes at a cost. May Holiday with Children

May is a great time for a trip with kids—temperatures are perfect for long walks without overheating, and attractions like carousels, the playground at Brzeźno pier, or boat tours along the Motława river are back in full swing after winter break. Unlike July, you also don’t have to worry about finding space on the beach—there’s always plenty available in May, though swimming in the sea isn’t really an option yet.

What to Pack for a May Weekend by the Sea

Weather in May can be unpredictable—sunny mornings may turn into cool, windy afternoons, especially near the beach. It’s worth packing a layered jacket, comfortable walking shoes (the Main Town is mostly cobblestones), and something for rain—May showers are more common than in summer, though they rarely last all day.
