Sobieszewo Island — Wild Seals, Bird Paradise & Crowds-Free Beaches

Formally, it’s still Gdansk, Poland, but when you stand on the flood defense wall and look toward the mouth of the Vistula River, it’s hard to believe — no high-rises, no pier, just reeds, sand dunes, and if you’re lucky, a few dozen seals basking on a sandy shoal. Sobieszewo Island is the easternmost tip of the city and offers a completely different rhythm from the rest of Gdansk.

Two Reserves on One Island

On Sobieszewo, two nature reserves operate side by side but offer completely different experiences—and it’s easy to confuse them. Ptasi Raj is closer to the main beach, offers free entry year-round, and focuses on nesting birds. Mewia Łacha lies further away, at the mouth of the Vistula River in Świbnie, and is where you’ll find seals. If you only have time for one, your choice depends on whether birds or mammals interest you—and even better if you can see both.

Ptasi Raj — a trail that requires no planning

The reserve is home to 45 bird species, and over 200 can be observed here throughout the year—from gulls to species that stop only during migration. The educational path leads to an observation tower and is open from dawn to dusk, with no ticket or reservation required. This makes Ptasi Raj the simplest stop on the route—just show up.

Mewia Łacha — seal colony at the mouth of the Vistula

What sets Sobieszewo apart from any other trip around Gdansk is what happens right here. Thanks to its location at the mouth of the Vistula and a ban on entering the reserve’s beach, the largest wild gray seal colony on Poland’s coast has formed on the sandy shoals — in peak periods, nearly 600 animals were counted simultaneously. Observations are possible year-round, though activity is highest from April to July, including birdlife, as the reserve protects colonies of terns and habitats for sandpipers and plovers.

The best way to start is at the port in Świbnie and walk along the trail to the steel observation tower, offering views of the Vistula mouth, bird colonies, and seals basking on the shoals. Bring binoculars if you have them — there’s a good distance from the tower to the animals, and the reserve deliberately keeps people at a distance.

Beaches — 11 kilometers of space

The Sobieszewo coastline stretches for over 11 kilometers, with protected beaches in three locations: Sobieszewo, Orle, and Świbno, each equipped with changing rooms, toilets, and showers. Compared to Brzeźno or Jelitkowo, the difference is noticeable within minutes — even in mid-August, you’ll find a stretch of sand all to yourself. How to Get There

The easiest way without a car is bus ZTM line 186 from the Gdańsk Oliwa PKP or Bretowo stops — allow 45–60 minutes depending on traffic and time of day. To reach the Mewia Łacha reserve in Świbnie, buses 112 or 212 are more convenient. By car, the most efficient route is via the Sobieszewski Bridge — the journey takes 20–40 minutes depending on which part of Gdansk you’re leaving from.

No matter which Mint accommodation you’re staying at — DOKI, Bastion Wałowa, or Seaside in Letnica — travel time to the island will be similar, as Sobieszewo lies on the opposite side of the city from all of them. It’s worth checking the timetable the day before to avoid delays during transfers.

Day plan on the island

If you’re visiting for a full day, this schedule works well and doesn’t require running around with a watch in hand:

1. Morning — Bird Paradise, walk along the trail and the observation tower (no ticket required, so you can arrive at any time).
2. Later — take a ride or walk toward Świbno, the observation tower overlooking Mewia Łacha, and watch for seals.
3. Afternoon — beach, one of three guarded ones, depending on where you are.
4. Return — leave some extra time, as buses to Gdańsk run less frequently than in the city center.

Who is Sobieszewo for?

This isn’t a trip for someone who has just one day in Gdańsk and wants to see as much as possible—travel time eats up too much of your schedule compared to what you’ll actually see. It makes sense if you’ve already explored the Main Town and are looking for something completely different: peace, nature, and a real chance to see wild animals without going to the zoo. It works great with older children who enjoy longer walks—though with very young toddlers, the journey alone might be too long.
